• Joba Chamberlain says he thinks he could return to the Yankees next week, and he expects to be used out of the bullpen. On the disabled list with rotator cuff tendinitis, Chamberlain threw 45 pitches off a mound Thursday and said his arm felt good. His next step will be facing batters in a simulated game Saturday at Yankee Stadium. If he feels OK after that session, the 22-year-old right-hander said he believes he would soon be ready to come off the DL.
• The Blue Jays designated Matt Stairs for assignment after Thursday night's 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay, and the DH-outfielder expects to be traded by Saturday. "I can tell you that I am going to a contender, so that makes it a little easier to swallow," said Stairs, who would not name the team. The Blue Jays would say only that they are working on a deal.
• Rays closer Troy Percival (right knee) threw 39 pitches in batting practice and could be activated from the 15-day disabled list by early next week.
• Blue Jays third baseman Scott Rolen (left shoulder) is expected to be back in the starting lineup today.
• The Athletics activated outfielder Ryan Sweeney from the 15-day DL and started him in right field against the Twins on Thursday night. Sweeney had been out with a sprained right thumb since Aug. 13.
• Second baseman Howie Kendrick, one of the Angels' top hitters this season, went on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with a strained left hamstring. Kendrick, batting .308, felt tightness in the hamstring running from first to second in the fourth inning and left Wednesday night's game against Oakland, a 6-5 loss.
