AL inside pitch

• Mitch Maier of the Royals was hit in the face by a pitch from Indians left-hander Zach Jackson and left the game in the fifth inning Wednesday night. The outfielder was taken to a hospital for X-rays and further evaluation, the team said.
• The Orioles filled out their bullpen Wednesday, replacing injured closer George Sherrill by purchasing the contract of right-hander Kam Mickolio from Triple-A Norfolk. The 24-year-old was obtained in the February trade that sent pitcher Erik Bedard to the Mariners.
• Josh Beckett remains on course to start for the Red Sox on Tuesday, although manager Terry Francona said he will not be overly disappointed if the right-hander gets pushed back again. Beckett's next start was moved from Saturday to Tuesday after he developed a sore right elbow that created numbness in his hand.
• The Twins activated second baseman Alexi Casilla from the disabled list Wednesday, getting their No. 2 hitter back in time for their road trip.
• Sean Gallagher has a tired right arm and will skip his next scheduled start for the Athletics, and Justin Duchscherer will probably do the same. "I think the rest is what's going to help him," manager Bob Geren said Wednesday, after Gallagher gave up a career-high 10 runs in five innings against Minnesota the night before. Duchscherer was scheduled for an MRI on Wednesday on his right hip.
• White Sox center fielder DeWayne Wise left Wednesday's game after straining a muscle near his groin. He was replaced by former Wildcat Brian Anderson.
• The Royals placed pitcher Luke Hochevar on the 15-day DL Wednesday because of a rib injury.
