• Texas Rangers All-Star second baseman Ian Kinsler might be able to avoid season-ending surgery for a sports hernia after receiving an encouraging diagnosis from a specialist Tuesday. Kinsler, a Tucson native, said Dr. John Preskitt in Dallas told him there was probably no torn muscle in the left side of his groin area. If he shows progress next week, there's a chance he could return to the lineup at the end of his DL stint. Kinsler was injured against Tampa Bay on Sunday night.
• The Kansas City Royals signed free agent pitcher Kip Wells on Tuesday. Wells started the season as the Colorado Rockies' opening day starter, but was eventually demoted to the bullpen.
• Josh Beckett's next start has been pushed back while the Boston Red Sox try to determine the cause of lingering numbness in his right hand. Beckett was scheduled to pitch Saturday against Toronto. Instead, he's tentatively set to start Tuesday night when the Red Sox play New York at Yankee Stadium. Left-hander Jon Lester will take Beckett's start Saturday.
• Orioles closer and All-Star pitcher George Sherrill was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with left shoulder inflammation.
• The Tampa Bay Rays' B.J. Upton apologized Tuesday for a "mental lapse" on the bases, saying he didn't want to become a distraction. Benched three times in the past two weeks for not hustling, Upton looked shocked Monday night when he was thrown out at second base on what should have been a routine double. Manager Joe Maddon did not take him out of the game.
• Luke Hochevar of the Kansas City Royals left his start against the Cleveland Indians with tightness in his right rib cage while warming up for the sixth inning Tuesday night. He allowed seven hits over five innings.
