• Rangers All-Star second baseman Ian Kinsler, a Canyon del Oro High School grad, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a sports hernia, and could be headed for season-ending surgery. Kinsler, who was leading the majors with 165 hits and 102 runs, had an MRI on Monday that revealed the problem on the left side of his groin. "I hope I can avoid surgery …," Kinsler said Monday. "If it's surgery, then I'm out eight weeks and I'm done for the season. But until the doctor tells me, I'm going to hope for the best."
• Yankees pitcher Carl Pavano, who has been disparaged by some teammates for his lack of durability, could pitch this weekend. New York needs a fifth starter on Saturday at Baltimore, and the choice comes down to Pavano or Phil Hughes. Since signing a $39.95 million, four-year contract with the Yankees before the 2005 season, Pavano has made just 19 appearances, going 5-6.
• Red Sox right-hander Curt Schilling says he's leaning "very heavily" toward retirement and is waiting until spring training approaches to see if he wants to try to pitch again. Schilling, who underwent season-ending shoulder surgery on June 23, said in his most recent blog entry that his shoulder "is getting better fast." Still, he said "the pendulum is swinging very heavily in the direction of it just being over."
• Rays closer Troy Percival decided Monday not to have surgery on his injured right knee and hopes to resume throwing off a mound in four or five days. He damaged cartilage in the knee while fielding a bunt Thursday against Oakland. He might have surgery after the season.
• Indians DH Travis Hafner, sidelined with a strained right shoulder for nearly three months, had two hits in his first rehab appearance for Triple-A Buffalo on Monday night.
