• Yankees manager Joe Girardi was optimistic Saturday that injured right-hander Joba Chamberlain could be back soon, but a timetable still hasn't been set. The same goes for designated hitter Hideki Matsui, who homered in Class A Tampa's doubleheader Friday. Chamberlain threw for the first time Friday, making 25 tosses from about 65 feet. Matsui, who's been out since June 27, homered in his first minor-league rehab game for his only hit in the doubleheader. Girardi said Matsui is scheduled to play another rehab game on Saturday.
• Tampa Bay Rays center fielder B.J. Upton was benched for the second time in less than two weeks for failing to run hard on a double-play grounder in the sixth inning of Friday night's 7-0 victory over the Rangers. Rays manager Joe Maddon punished Upton by keeping him out of the lineup Saturday night against Texas.
• Carlos Silva was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with what the Seattle Mariners called tendinitis in his elbow. Ryan Feierabend will be officially recalled from Triple-A Tacoma before the game today, and will start against the Twins.
• Rangers designated hitter Milton Bradley was scratched from the starting lineup about an hour before Texas' game Saturday night against the Tampa Bay Rays. The club said Bradley was sick and being evaluated by team doctors. No other specifics were given.
• Just hours after agreeing to terms with the Texas Rangers, first-round draft pick Justin Smoak met the team and took batting practice on Saturday. Smoak, the 11th overall pick in June, and the Rangers came to an agreement Friday just 15 minutes before the midnight EDT deadline.
