• The San Francisco Giants designated infielder Jose Castillo for assignment Wednesday and called up three players from the minors. The team recalled first baseman Travis Ishikawa from Triple-A Fresno and purchased the contracts of catcher-first baseman Pablo Sandoval and infielder Ryan Rohlinger from Double-A Connecticut.

• Braves slugger Chipper Jones was scratched from Wednesday night's second game of a doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs with a stomach virus.

• The Pirates activated first baseman Adam LaRoche (strained rib cage) from the 15-day disabled list and sent third baseman Jose Bautista to Triple-A Indianapolis. They also announced the signing of left-hander Justin Wilson, their fifth-round draft choice out of Fresno State. Wilson was the winning pitcher in the deciding game of this year's College World Series.

• The Padres claimed right-hander pitcher Brian Falkenborg off outright waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday. Falkenborg had a 2-2 record with a 6.17 ERA in 16 relief appearances.

• The Brewers placed infielder-outfielder Russell Branyan on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a strained muscle in his right side.
