A woman was flown to a Phoenix-area hospital with severe burns after her Southeast Side trailer home caught fire Sunday afternoon.
Firefighters arrived shortly after 2 p.m. at Town & Country Mobile Estates near East Benson Highway and East Valencia Road. Upon arrival, they found that the two people who were in the trailer home had escaped with the help of two neighbors, said Deputy Chief James Stoltenberg, a Rural/Metro Fire Department spokesman.
Both people in the home when it caught fire were injured. A woman had third-degree burns and was flown to the Arizona Burn Center at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix. A man was taken to a local hospital and treated for small burns and smoke inhalation, Stoltenberg said.
The neighbors also were injured while helping the people out of their home and working to put out the fire before firefighters arrived. Both suffered smoke inhalation. One was taken to a local hospital and the other was treated and released at the scene, Stoltenberg said.
After tending to the injured, firefighters were able to get the blaze under control within 40 minutes, Stoltenberg said.
Officials did not have an estimated cost of damage Sunday night, but the trailer was completely destroyed, he said.
Officials are still working to determine what caused the fire. The investigation has been turned over to the Pima County Sheriff's Department, Stoltenberg said.
