Members of an East Side family had to flee their home Sunday morning when a space heater started a fire in their bathroom.
A woman and her son were sleeping in their house near East Tanque Verde and North Kolb roads when their fire alarm woke them up shortly before 2 a.m., said Capt. Trish Tracy, a Tucson Fire Department spokeswoman.
They quickly evacuated to a designated meeting place where they called 911 and told dispatchers that their bathroom was on fire, Tracy said.
Firefighters arrived and extinguished the fire in less than 10 minutes, she said.
Firefighters discovered that a picture frame that had been set on top of the space heater started the fire.
The woman told firefighters that she did not know the space heater had been left on, Tracy said.
Officials estimated that the fire caused about $2,000 in damage, she said.
Space heaters should be turned off and unplugged when left unattended, and anything that can burn should be kept at least three feet away from the heater, Tracy said.
