A 24-year-old man who tried to light a woman on fire outside Tucson Police Department headquarters was arrested Monday afternoon, police said.
Jason Underwood faces charges of assault and endangerment, according to Officer Chuck Rydzak, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.
The incident occurred about 1:30 p.m. outside the Downtown police station at 270 S. Stone Ave., Rydzak said.
Underwood reportedly went to a liquor store across the street and bought a quart of lighter fluid, Rydzak said.
He went back across the street and without saying a word, doused a woman he did not know with the fluid.
He lit five matches but they likely were blown out by the wind, Rydzak said.
A group of people in the area intervened, including one woman who struck Underwood in the head with a 40-ounce beer bottle, Rydzak said.
A Tucson Police desk officer was flagged down and was first on the scene. Others from the Department's Internal Affairs Office also went out after seeing the incident through a window, Rydzak said.
Water was thrown on the woman to make sure she was no longer flammable, he said. She was not injured.
The Pima County Attorney's Office declined to file felony charges, so Underwood was cited on the two misdemeanors and released to St. Mary's Hospital to be treated for cuts.
Underwood has been arrested in the past on charges of assault and disorderly conduct, consuming liquor in public, criminal trespass, threats and resisting arrest, according to online court records.
