A vandal re-aimed the traffic cameras at four collision-prone intersections over the weekend in an attempt to keep them from snapping photos of speeders and red-light runners, an official said.
Tucson Police Department traffic Sgt. James Scott said he got an e-mail from the vendor saying many of the cameras that shoot pictures of drivers as they speed through the intersections had been moved.
He said crews were working Monday to reposition the cameras and they should be operational by the end of the day.
The cameras are part of the city’s photo enforcement program, which includes cameras located at what police consider accident-prone intersections along with a roving photo-radar van that targets speeders and is usually deployed near school zones.
Someone on Saturday reported seeing a man get off his motorcycle and begin to move the cameras, Scott said. He said he learned about the vandalism about 9 p.m. Saturday.
The vandalism does raise concerns, he said, especially if anyone who doesn't like the cameras can reposition them and make them useless.
Still, he said he hasn't heard many complaints about the cameras and there haven't been many reports of vandalism.
