A prominent Tucson boxer was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence after his fiancee told police he assaulted her and broke a window of their home during an argument, an official said Thursday.
Norberto "Nito" Bravo, 37, was booked into Pima County jail on Dec. 21 on suspicion of assault/domestic violence, criminal damage/domestic violence and contributing to the delinquency and dependency of a minor, said Sgt. Fabian Pacheco, a Tucson Police Department spokesman. All are misdemeanor charges, and Bravo has since been released, Pacheco said.
His court date is a pretrial hearing scheduled for Jan. 22, according Tucson City Court records.
Bravo appeared on a competitive ESPN reality series about boxers called "The Contender" in 2006. His reported abuse took place in the presence of the engaged couple's 4-year-old son, Pacheco said.
Just before 10 p.m. Dec. 21, someone called 911 from the 4800 block of East Melissa Street and hung up, Pacheco said. An officer was dispatched 10 minutes later, he said.
In the meantime, a woman called 911 about 10:20 p.m. from a residence in the 4500 block of East 28th Street, Pacheco said. When officers arrived they talked with the woman who told them she had been assaulted by her fiance at their home on East Melissa Street, Pacheco said.
She had suffered minor injuries, and "had marks consistent with what she was reporting as the assault," Pacheco said.
He couldn't say specifically what led to the altercation between Bravo and the woman, but it was alcohol-related, Pacheco said. "There was a dispute between them that resulted in Bravo's arrest," he said.
Bravo left the residence after the fight but returned looking for his keys and, when his fiancee refused to let him in the house, he broke a window in an attempt to get in, Pacheco said.
At that point Bravo's fiancee gave him his keys and left the home on East Melissa, then went to the house on East 28th Street where a family member lived, Pacheco said.
As officers talked to the woman, another officer went to Bravo's home where he was taken into custody without incident, Pacheco said.
Attempts to reach Bravo weren't successful Thursday afternoon.
