Authorities added charges this week against the mother of a toddler who was killed over the summer.
The mother's boyfriend was also arrested in connection with the July death of 13-month-old Peter Blanco.
Christina A. Blanco, 22, was booked Wednesday into the Pima County jail on suspicion of murder and child abuse for her role in the death of her son, said Sgt. Mark Robinson, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.
On July 14, Peter's mother left him and his 4-year-old sister in the care of Alvaro Andres Ramos-Cardenas, 24, for several hours in the morning. About 9:30 a.m., Ramos-Cardenas told Christina Blanco that Peter wasn't breathing, police have said.
Blanco called 911 from a home in the 300 block of West Canada Street, near South 12th Avenue and West Drexel Road.
According to court records, it was reported that Peter stopped breathing after taking a fall while learning to walk. However, doctors told police that the injuries — a fractured skull, brain bleeding and a lacerated liver — were not consistent with a fall and were not accidental.
The child was put on a life support at University Medical Center but died about two days later, Robinson said.
Investigators arrested Ramos-Cardenas on suspicion of child abuse the day Peter was taken to the hospital, Robinson said. A charge of first-degree murder was added when Peter died.
He was also arrested on a second child-abuse charge after Peter's 4-year-old sister told authorities that a bruise on her cheek and a burn on her leg were caused by Ramos-Cardenas.
Ramos-Cardenas was booked into jail but was released to Pretrial Services Sept. 18. Peter's mother wrote a letter to the court stating that her boyfriend would never harm her children or anyone else's.
Police could not say exactly what role Blanco played nor how long the abuse had taken place because the investigation is not complete, Robinson said.
The whereabouts of Peter's 4-year-old sister were not immediately available Thursday.
