Tucson police have reported 320 thefts of bicycles this year, with nearly a quarter of them occurring within a few miles of the University of Arizona, crime data show.
At 20 locations, there were multiple thefts, according to Tucson Police Department data.
The thefts are spread across the city with a concentration Downtown and near the UA in an area bounded by Grant Road on the north, Country Club Road on the east, 22nd Street on the south and Interstate 10 on the west.
The area has had about 80 thefts this year, data show.
The sites of multiple thefts are spread throughout town, with one location near Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, in the 7700 block of East Stella Road, reporting five bike thefts.
Thefts on the UA campus are not included in the data shown on the map.
According to the most recent statistics available, the University of Arizona Police Department reported 327 bike thefts in 2005.
Police and national bicycling groups have several tips to avoid bike theft. They include:
● Lock your bike to a bike rack using a U-lock combined with a cable.
● Put the cable through both tires and the body of the bike and be sure to connect the U-lock through the frame and front tire of the bike.
● Bikes locked to parking meters or street signs can easily be lifted over the object, so lock the bike to something more secure.
● Avoid locking a bike to chain link fences or wooden railings that can easily be cut.
