RALEIGH, N.C. — A two-week break for the Winter Olympics did nothing to change the Carolina Hurricanes' third-period magic.
Aaron Ward scored two goals — including the go-ahead score late in the third — to help the Hurricanes rally for a 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins on Wednesday night, giving Carolina its seventh win when trailing entering the final period.
Ray Whitney and Oleg Tverdovsky added goals for the Hurricanes, who have won all three games with Boston this season by 4-3 scores.
Carolina earned its 40th win, marking only the third such season in franchise history. The Hurricanes have already surpassed their previous high of 38 wins since moving from Hartford before the 1997-98 season.
Carolina, which leads the Eastern Conference with 84 points, also improved to 25-5-1 at home to move to within one win of a franchise record.
Marco Sturm, David Tanabe and Sergei Samsonov scored for the Bruins, who have won one of their past six games.
● Blackhawks 3, Predators 0: In Chicago, Craig Anderson made 20 saves for his first shutout of the season and defenseman Dustin Byfuglien scored in his first NHL game to lead the Blackhawks.
Rene Bourque and Patrick Sharp also scored to help the Blackhawks snap a three-game losing streak and beat the Predators for the first time in six meetings this season.
● Devils 2, Flyers 1, SO: In East Rutherford, N.J., Viktor Kozlov scored in regulation and added the only goal in a shootout for New Jersey.
Kozlov beat Robert Esche with a high shot in the shootout, and New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur stopped Mike Richards and Petr Nedved and watched as Peter Forsberg shot wide on the Flyers' third attempt.
● Senators 4, Penguins 3: In Pittsburgh, Daniel Alfredsson and Dany Heatley scored their 35th goals of the season and Ottawa built a four-goal lead before holding on to win.
Pittsburgh's John LeClair, Andre Roy and Jani Rita scored in an 8-minute span of the third.
● Thrashers 4, Sabres 2: In Buffalo, N.Y., Kari Lehtonen made 34 saves, and Brad Larsen scored two goals for Atlanta in the Thrashers' fourth victory in their last five games.
Vyacheslav Kozlov and Niclas Havelid also scored for Atlanta.
Chris Drury, and Maxim Afinogenov scored for Buffalo. The Sabres have lost three of their last four.
● Blues 4, Oilers 2: In Edmonton, Alberta, Curtis Sanford made 35 saves, and Scott Young scored two goals to lead St. Louis past Edmonton.
Keith Tkachuk and Jay McClement also scored for St. Louis, 6-1-1 in its last eight games.
Chris Pronger and Marc-Andre Bergeron scored for Edmonton, which outshoot the Blues 37-12. The Oilers have lost four straight to drop to eighth in the Western Conference.
The Oilers were pressing for the tying goal when Young scored with 1:29 left to put the game out of reach.
● Red Wings 2, Mighty Ducks 0: In Anaheim, Calif., Olympic champions Tomas Holmstrom and Henrik Zetterberg scored in a 46-second span in the first period and Chris Osgood made 24 saves in Detroit's victory over Anaheim.
Holmstrom and Zetterberg were among five Detroit players who returned to the lineup after helping Sweden beat Finland in the gold-medal game Sunday in Turin, Italy.
Seven minutes into the opening period, Holmstrom found himself with the puck alone in front of Anaheim goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere. The Swede swiftly moved to the backhand to loft in his 20th goal of the season.
Working on a power play less than a minute later, Zetterberg swiped in a rebound of Lidstrom's shot from the point to make it 2-0.
