Tucson's Let's Dance Club Inc. is not a tribute to David Bowie's 1983 song of the same name.
Rather, the nonprofit offers locals the chance to practice their ballroom moves in their best imitation of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
Maurice Swinnen, currently the group's secretary, started Let's Dance about 26 years ago and has been volunteering with it ever since.
Dance sessions are held from 7 to 10:15 p.m., Wednesday nights at the Tucson Women's Club, 6245 E. Bellevue St. Let's Dance members pay $6, and guests $8.
The group has about 200 members, which Swinnen said range in age from 30 to 80 years old.
For those nonmembers, for whom the fox trot seems formidable, instructor-led dance lessons are offered on a variety of steps from 7 to 8 p.m. at no extra cost.
"Lately, we have had more women than men. I think it is because men are born with three left feet," Swinnen joked.
Despite a sometimes uneven gender count, singles are welcome.
To get things moving, for 20 minutes every hour, the attending men and women are lined up facing each other and paired off.
"Lots of people come by themselves. We make sure that boys meet girls," Swinnen said. "Even at 70 years old, some of them are still shy."
