Ryan Dahlstrom, former Tucson concert promoter, is launching a songwriting competition for U.S. military personnel.
Heroes Lyrics for the Military challenges budding poets and songwriters to pen their lyrics and post them to a Web site to be voted on by the public. The only ones who can submit lyrics are active military personnel.
The top 12 songs will be professionally recorded and released by celebrated rock, country and R&B artists, Dahlstrom said in an e-mail.
Dahlstrom, who booked concerts into the long-defunct New West night club in Marana and, through his own company, into Old Tucson Studios and Desert Diamond Casino, recently relocated to Las Vegas, where he works for an events production company.
Dahlstrom has worked with the military for the past several years. He spent 18 months in Kuwait as the entertainment coordinator in Kuwait and Iraq, setting up concerts through the USO, Navy Entertainment, Stars for Stripes, AKA Productions and other companies that took touring acts to the troops.
After returning home to Tucson, Dahlstrom, 36, continued producing military tours abroad for Navy Entertainment in places that included Jordan, Turkey, Spain, Italy, Greece, Germany and the United Arab Emirates, he said.
Troops can submit their lyrics at heroeslyrics.com. Voting will take place next year on the Web site.
