Chris Rock, comedian, actor, producer and one of the 100 most influential people in the world, according to Time magazine, returns to his stand-up roots on Saturday night with his fifth television special: "Kill the Messenger" on HBO.
Rock has become one of the brightest stars of comedy since making his first appearance nearly 20 years ago as a cast member on "Saturday Night Live."
He has provided voices for animated hits, appeared in movies from "I Think I Love My Wife" to "The Longest Yard" and created "Everybody Hates Chris," a disarming television series on the CW network that's based on his childhood.
Still, it's indisputable that his comic brilliance is most apparent when he's onstage with a mic in his hand. "Bigger & Blacker" (1999) remains a stand-up performance that ranks with the best of Eddie Murphy and George Carlin.
With the election around the corner, he should be packing plenty of comic heat.
"Kill the Messenger," which was taped in London, Johannesburg and New York, premieres at 10 p.m.
