Old soul meets neo-soul as Al Green brings tracks from "Lay It Down," his latest Blue Note Records effort, to the Desert Diamond Casino Sunday night.
Produced by James Poyser, known best for his work with Common and Erykah Badu, and Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson of the Roots, "Lay It Down" shows Green at ease with a series of vocal heavy hitters.
The 62-year-old Arkansas-born singer seems right at home dueting with pianist John Legend, Anthony Hamilton and London singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae.
Thompson told the Wall Street Journal that they wanted the release to be a follow-up to 1977's "The Belle Album," considered by many die-hard Green fans to be his last great secular release before he turned toward religion.
"Lay It Down" has given Green exposure to new generations born after monster hits such as 1971's "Let's Stay Together" and "Tired of Being Alone."
He has taken a break from preaching to his congregation of the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Memphis, Tenn., to hit the road through the Southwest before heading to Europe.
Sunday's show starts at 7 p.m., and tickets are $35 to $65 through Ticketmaster, 321-1000.
