Tucson, Arizona | Published: 08.21.2008
Influential punk/metal act Melvins swing by Plush on Tuesday.
The group, with almost a quarter-century in the game, released a new album this year, "Nude With Boots," which is full of chunky riffs and pounding drums.
Melvins have a history too extensive for these pages, but let's just say the late Kurt Cobain was what one might call "a fan."
Hard rockers Big Business will open at 9:30 p.m. The cover is $13.
Don't let Mama tell you not to come to this show
Classic rockers Three Dog Night are hitting Desert Diamond Casino and not overcharging.
Tickets are a nice $18 to hear live renditions of "One," "Joy to the World," and "Mama Told Me (Not To Come.)"
Not bad for a Saturday night, right boomers?
The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are available through ticketmaster.com.
Seattle group Head Like a Kite at Plush on Sunday
Seattle's Head Like a Kite makes soundscape blends that mix rock, hip-hop and ambient- sounds, sort of like Spoon meets DJ Shadow.
The group's second album, "There Is Loud Laughter Everywhere," features guest appearances from members of The Long Winters and Crooked Fingers.
Head Like a Kite plays Plush Sunday with Tucson's L Eye and 21 Pump Street. The show starts at 9 p.m. and costs $6.
Bob Log III returning to Tucson for Plush show
The one and only Bob Log III will make a special return appearance to Tucson at Plush on Saturday.
If you're not familiar with Log, here's three things to know: space helmet, loud guitar, one-man band.
He used to live in Tucson, so this is going to be a nice reunion and probably packed.
The show starts at 9:30 p.m. with openers Left Lane Cruiser and good 'ol Tom Walbank. It'll cost you $8.
These United States playing Plush for free
The sleeper show of the week is happening . . . in a week.
Washington, D.C.'s These United States will play Plush next Thursday at 9:30 p.m.
These guys played on a bill earlier this year at Plush with Bon Iver and were as just as good as the group's debut album, "A Picture of the Three of Us at the Gate to the Garden of Eden."
Oh, and next Thursday's show is free.
Lisa Otey's family show rescheduled from August
Lisa Otey and Diane Van Deurzen will share the Z Mansion stage with Otey's mom, Gay, and brother David for two special performances next week.
The shows on Monday and Tuesday were originally scheduled for Aug. 4, but were canceled when Otey's father died.
The rescheduled concerts will pay tribute to Otey's father and to Van Deurzen's mother, who died in July.
Otey is a heralded Tucson blues singer and boogie-woogie pianist, while her partner, Van Deurzen, is a respected vocalist. Otey's brother plays trombone and has a regular gig on Princess cruise ships. Her mom anchors the ensemble at piano and vocals.
Monday's and Tuesday's concerts begin at 7 p.m. at Z Mansion, 288 N. Church Ave. Tickets are $20 online at www.lisaotey.com. For reservations, call 370-5912.
