Larry Gatti wants to be clear: He's not in the mob.
"People often ask if I'm related to John Gotti," he says. "I guess they don't realize he spelled his name with an 'o.' "
That's not the only difference between the barkeep who works at Sam Hughes Place Championship Dining and the former New York gangster.
Gotti whacked people.
Gatti pricks people.
In addition to bartending, he's an acupuncturist who recently opened his own studio, Tucson Community Acupuncture, 2900 E. Broadway.
Gatti graduated from the Tri-State College of Acupuncture last summer, then moved with his wife and their 2-year-old son to Benson.
"My wife grew up in Benson, and we thought Southern Arizona would be a good place to raise a kid and a good place to start my acupuncture practice," he says.
What's your favorite thing about Tucson?
"Monsoons. I'm a big fan of the lightning displays. It's very entertaining to watch from a distance."
What's your least favorite thing?
"The driving. Since we live in Benson, I have to commute every day. But we're going to move in town soon."
What is your son's name?
"Quinn. My wife really likes that Bob Dylan song, 'Quinn the Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn).'"
What do you do when you're not working?
"I'm a dad, husband and acupuncturist, in that order. That's really all I have time for."
What did you do before you started a family?
"Before that . . . I don't remember."
How do you relax?
"I'm big into yoga. There's no yoga studio in Benson, but once we move to Tucson I plan on going to Yoga Oasis more."
Seen any good movies lately?
" 'Dark Knight' was freaking awesome. It's an epic crime drama and Heath Ledger's performance is just extraordinary."
Been to any good shows lately?
"I saw Golden Boots at Plush not so long ago. I like that band. They're local and kind of quirky."
Have you invented any drinks?
"When the mojito hit, around 2003 or 2004, I was making sometimes 50 mojitos a night and those are labor-intensive drinks. So I needed to come up with a drink that was like a mojito but easier to make. And I invented the Mojarita, which is a cross between a mojito and a margarita. It's made with tequila, mint, margarita mix and ice, and is flash-blended."
