The popular soup and salad chain Sweet Tomatoes claimed a sweet victory in this week's Food Fight looking for the best buffet/all-you-can-eat restaurant in Tucson.
Based in San Diego, the 30-year-old chain, known as the Souplantation in other locations, has more than 109 restaurants in 15 states, including two in Tucson at 6202 E. Broadway and 4420 N. Stone Ave.
Old Pueblo fans such as Mike Collins, a software test engineer and type-2 diabetic, enjoy the "variety of veggies and soups offered for calorie watchers."
"I also like their assortment of soups and chili since they are in my diet plan," the 50-year-old added in an e-mail follow-up.
Carla Yamauchi, 61, said she and her husband have been going to Sweet Tomatoes for years. They don't go nearly as often as they used to since moving to Sierra Vista in December, but they make it a point to visit whenever they're in town.
"I am vegan and I cannot think of another restaurant that I can depend on for a variety that is satisfying at a reasonable price," she said. "The Broadway store has a happy, helpful, friendly crew to take care of used plates and drink refills."
Sweet Tomatoes sits at the top of the Food Fight chain above an international array of buffets including those serving Indian, Chinese and Americana cuisine.
Among the other top picks:
● Rigo's Mexican Restaurant, 2527 S. Fourth Ave.
● Sushi Garden, with locations at 15 N. Alvernon Way and 7401 N. La Cholla Blvd.
● Golden Corral with locations at 4380 E. 22nd St., 6385 S. Midvale Park Road and 715 E. Wetmore Road.
● India Oven, 2727 N. Campbell Ave.
● Dragon View restaurant, 400 N. Bonita Ave.
