'This American Life' returns to Showtime on Sunday night
Has Ira Glass, below, become the new king of all media?
It would seem so when you consider that his popular public-radio show, "This American Life," made a successful transition to cable television last year and returns Sunday night for its second season on Showtime. The season premiere starts at 10 p.m.
But radio and television aren't big enough to contain this guy's intelligent, funny and very true stories drawn from everyday life.
Tonight, Glass will be on the big screen in theaters nationwide with a live (or nearly live) broadcast of his show from New York. You can catch it at 8 p.m. at El Con and Park Place theaters. Tickets are $20, available at fandango.com.
Oh, and mark your calendars for May 9, 2009, when the man behind "TAL" will be in Tucson for an appearance at the UA's Centennial Hall. Call 621-3341.
Free Comic Book Day is here!
If you're a comic book fan, this weekend holds a lot of promise.
Tonight at midnight, "Iron Man," based on the hit Marvel comic, hits theaters.
On Saturday, you can get a free comic book at Charlie's Comic Books, 5445 E. 22nd St., or at Heroes & Villains, 4533 E. Broadway. It's all part of Free Comic Book Day. Stores all over the world will give away some 2 million comic books.
Charlie's will be giving away comics between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Heroes & Villains will be doing the same between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
At Heroes & Villains, you'll have the chance to give as well as get. Dune Sea Garrison, the local chapter of the 501st Legion, which is an international organization of Star Wars fans who use their custom-made, movie-accurate costumes for local charities and causes, will be collecting new, unwrapped toys to give to children in Tucson hospitals. For more info, go to FreeComicBook Day.com or duneseagarrison.com.
Spirit of Woodstock hits Westward Look Saturday
The Woodstock music festival in '69 was about peace, understanding, free love, mud and drugs. And it's being revived, sort of, for a day at the lush Westward Look Resort. On Saturday, from 6 to 10 p.m., Westward Look will roll out local acts including The Wayback Machine to play the music of the era.
Tickets ($25 in advance for seats and $25 for lawn seating day of the show) can be bought at the resort's gift shop, 245 E. Ina Road. A portion of the proceeds goes to breast cancer research.
Jerry Douglas glides into Rialto on Friday night
