He's a little bit country; he's a little jazz.
But on a New York City stage in early January, Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis played the blues in four sold-out performances.
Those concerts at Jazz at Lincoln Center are destined to become an album soon, and Marsalis and Nelson spent part of the day Tuesday at Old Tucson Studios posing for photographs that will grace album packaging.
Old Tucson Studios? Why not New York?
Both men happened to be in Tucson on Tuesday. Marsalis played a nearly sold-out UApresents concert at Centennial Hall while Nelson played the first of two sold-out shows at Desert Diamond Casino.
It's a fair guess that it was one of Marsalis' first visits to the old movie soundstage, but Nelson must have felt right at home. He was surrounded by a cast outfitted in his footwear of choice (boots) and headgear (cowboy hats) in a setting that was his temporary home when he filmed the TV movie "Stagecoach" in 1985.
Marsalis and Nelson shared the stage at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Allen Room on Jan. 12 and 13. The goal, according to published reports, was to demonstrate why blues should be considered America's national music.
During the January performances, Nelson brought along his harmonica player, Mickey Raphael, and Marsalis brought his quintet — pianist Dan Nimmer, bass player Carlos Henriquez, drummer Ali Jackson and saxophonist Walter Blanding.
The album reportedly will be released in the fall. Some fans will get a sneak peak when the concert is broadcast on XM satellite radio — on the country and jazz channels. The broadcast is at 4 p.m. Tucson time April 6 on XM's traditional country channel, "Willie's Place" (XM 13), and XM's traditional jazz channel, "Real Jazz" (XM 70).
