For the first time in its 13 years, KIIM 99.5 FM's Desert Thunder Pro Rodeo will not have a big-name concert attached to it.
Last week, the country radio station learned that the trio Trick Pony, which was to headline the rodeo concert, had broken up. Its planned concert Saturday at Desert Diamond Casino was off.
With roughly a week's notice, the casino couldn't book a replacement act and support the new show, casino officials said.
Trick Pony lead singer Aubrey Collins announced Oct. 3 that she was leaving the band, citing creative differences in the studio between band members Ira Dean and Keith Burns. Collins, 19, had joined the pair in January, replacing former lead singer Heidi Newfield, who had left to pursue a solo career.
In a statement to fans last Friday, Burns and Dean said that while the trio had great chemistry during their live shows, they had vast differences on songwriting and recording. Collins issued a similar statement two days earlier.
Trick Pony had to cancel several concerts in addition to its Tucson show. Refunds are available at point of purchase, Desert Diamond officials said.
Karen Tallier, a spokeswoman for the band's management company, Graham Artist Management, said Burns and Dean made no official announcement about the split or their plans.
Meanwhile, Desert Pro Rodeo fans can catch the Phoenix-based country outfit Sidewinders in concert at Cactus Moon on Friday. That concert will now stand in as the official rodeo concert, said organizer Mike Harrelson. For details, contact the Cactus Moon, 5470 E. Broadway, at 748-0049.
Rodeo action is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Tucson Rodeo Grounds. Events include bull riding, saddle bronc and bareback riding, roping, barrel racing and steer wrestling.
Tickets are $10 in advance through the Cactus Moon; $15 at the gate. It's $15 for a reserved box seat; $25 for VIP. For details, call KIIM-FM, 887-1000.
