U.S. Border Patrol agents discovered nearly 2 tons of marijuana in a pair of stolen vehicles early Monday morning northeast of Sasabe.
At 1:45 a.m. Monday, agents patrolling near the Tres Bellotas Ranch spotted a vehicle crossing into the United States, said Rob Daniels, Border Patrol Tucson Sector spokesman. Agents found the tire tracks and followed them to a large wash.
They found two trucks in the wash: a 2004 Yukon Denali reported stolen from Tucson and a 2007 Ford F-150 reported stolen from Peoria, Daniels said. They found 130 bundles of marijuana in the truck and 64 bundles of marijuana in the SUV, he said.
The 3,900 pounds of marijuana, which has an estimated value of $2.24 million using figures from the National Drug Intelligence Center, was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Agents searched for the drivers of the vehicles but did not find them.
Agents in the Border Patrol's Tucson Sector had seized 775,243 pounds of marijuana from October through August, an 8 percent decrease from the same time in fiscal 2007, agency figures show.
The Arizona section of the U.S.-Mexican border continues to be the route of choice for drug smugglers: the Tucson Sector has seized more marijuana than any other on the Southwest border, accounting for half of all marijuana seized through August of fiscal 2008, agency figures show.
