U.S. Border Patrol agents made two large drug seizures Thursday.
The first occurred at 11:50 a.m. near the village of Gu Vo on the Tohono O'odham Nation when the Border Patrol received a call from a tribal member who noticed suspicious activity near a house, said Esmeralda Marroquin, Border Patrol Tucson Sector spokeswoman. Agents arrived to find a 2000 Chevrolet Suburban parked next to the house.
They found more than 1,400 pounds of marijuana packed in bundles inside the SUV, she said. Nobody was arrested in connection with the seizure.
The residents of the house said they didn't know whom the vehicle belonged to, but somebody had parked it there days before, Marroquin said.
The second seizure occurred about 5:30 p.m. farther north on Tohono O'odham land near the village of Cocklebur when agents encountered a 2000 GMC Yukon stuck in the mud, she said.
Agents found 22 backpacks full of marijuana near the vehicle, half-buried, she said. Two other backpacks were still in the SUV. Agents believe the SUV got stuck, and the drug smugglers started to bury the marijuana, she said.
The marijuana weighed a total of 1,100 pounds, she said. Agents didn't find anybody near the SUV, and nobody was arrested.
The 2,500 combined pounds of marijuana seized in the two incidents had an estimated value of $1.4 million, using figures from the National Drug Intelligence Center. Both loads of marijuana were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
