16 sweet reasons to watch and cheer

If you are a basketball junkie, you probably need no direction this weekend.
If the Final Four is one of the best weekends of the year, the regional round is not far behind — and there is one in Phoenix, starting today.
If you are not a basketball nut, fear not. We will help steer you in the right direction.
1If you like the "Rocky" movies, you would love: Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers are one of two No. 12 seeds to make the Sweet Sixteen — Villanova is the other — and the biggest surprise of the Big Dance. And did we mention WKU has a mountain-shaped, googly-eyed red mascot? Kinda looks like Sly Stallone in the last "Rocky" movie, which, um, nobody liked.
2If you like Shooter Jennings, you would love: Davidson guard Stephen Curry. Jennings' father, Waylon, is and always will be more relevant than his son. Same goes for Stephen, whose father, Dell, played in the NBA for 16 years. Like Shooter — an alt-country star — this shooter's résumé is impressive on its own. The Southern Conference Player of the Year has scored 70 points in two NCAA tournament games, and Davidson has won 24 straight dating to before Christmas.
3If you like your girlfriend or wife watching basketball with you, you would love: Villanova coach Jay Wright and Washington State coach Tony Bennett, who each have their own loyal following of female fans. Wright has "Jay's Angels," who watch Wildcats games on television just for the head coach. Bennett's fans wear T-shirts that say "Our coach is hotter than your coach."
4If you like your credit report, you would love: Davidson. Last week, the 1,700-student liberal arts college eliminated loans from its financial add packages. Beginning in August, students with financial need will be funded through grants and student aid. Not bad for a school that runs $38,000 per year.
5If you like Tom Wolfe, Colonel Sanders and John Travolta, you would love: Rick Pitino. On Feb. 9, the Louisville coach wore an all-white suit as part of the team's "white-out" promotion. At halftime, he changed back into his regular duds, afraid he would sweat and people would be able to see his blue, um, underpants.
6If you like Mickey Mouse, you would love: Brook and Robin Lopez. Stanford's twins know more about Walt Disney than anybody not raised in Toontown should and want to form their own cartoon business.
7If you like "Goodfellas," you would love: Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl. Like Ray Liotta's character Henry Hill in the 1990 movie, Pearl was dogged for turning into a "snitch." As an Iowa assistant in 1989, he recorded conversations with star recruit Deon Thomas that implicated Illinois in a payola scandal. Pearl was banished to Div. II, where he coached at Southern Indiana before moving up to Wisconsin-Milwaukee and then Tennessee.
8If you like wearing your Wildcats' gear, you would love: Villanova and Davidson. Two of the final 16 teams call themselves the Wildcats.
9If you like the West Coast, you would love: this year's tournament. According to betcris.com, the Pac-10 has the best odds to win the tournament — at 11-4. The next closest, the Atlantic Coast Conference, is 3-1.
10If you like the separation of church and state, you would love: Xavier and Villanova. Both are Roman Catholic — Xavier is Jesuit, and Villanova is Augustinian. They are two of four private schools left in the Big Dance — Davidson and Stanford are the others.
11If you like screaming, you would love: any game officiated by Curtis Shaw. He ejected Stanford coach Trent Johnson last week, the fifth coach — fifth! — he has tossed this season.
12If you like "The Biggest Loser," you would love: whoever plays North Carolina the rest of the way. The Tar Heels have won two tourney games by a total of 70 points.
13If you like Backstreet Boys, you would love: Texas, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Kansas. The four, along with six others — including Arizona — are the only schools to make the Big Dance in each of the past 10 years. Close your eyes, pretend it is 1999.
14If you like mountain climbing, you would love: The Mountaineers (West Virginia) and the Hilltoppers (Western Kentucky).
15If you like Ron Burgundy, you would love: This clip of the "Anchorman" character interviewing Michigan State coach Tom Izzo in February. Our favorite moments — when he asks Izzo whether Jay-Z's "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)" was written about him. The link: http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/c722e0c687
16If you like the Beach Boys and Paul Simon's "The Rhythm of the Saints," you would love: UCLA. Center Kevin Love is the nephew of Mike Love of Beach Boys fame. The Bruins have two Cameroonians — Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and Alfred Aboya. Maybe Cameroon's greatest musical contribution is Bikutsi, a native rhythm utilized on Simon's seminal 1990 album.
