A wildfire burning northeast of Bisbee Thursday caused the evacuation of 130 residents and was threatening 300 homes, an official said.
Bisbee police ordered the evacuations as a precaution, according to Cliff Pearlberg, a spokesman for the Arizona State Land Department.
An additional 150 commercial buildings and 300 outbuildings were also being threatened by the Moon Canyon Fire, but none had been lost and no injuries were reported Thursday night.
The fire, which charred about 550 acres as of 9:30 p.m., began around 10:45 a.m. behind a private structure 4 miles northeast of Bisbee, Pearlberg said. A cause has yet to be determined.
Approximately 200 people were expected to be working the blaze by the end of Thursday night and other resources that were being used include a number of engines from cooperating fire departments, two helicopters and a single engine airplane, Pearlberg said.
The projected date for containment of the fire is Monday, Pearlberg said. He anticipated that the fire would continue to grow overnight through Friday but said that it was not spreading at a rapid rate.
