The search for TUSD's new leader has narrowed.
The Governing Board on Tuesday night selected local businessman Richard Myers and Iowa educator Elizabeth Celania-Fagen as the remaining two candidates for superintendent of TUSD. The vote was 5-0.
TUSD Deputy Superintendent Patti Lopez and Delfino Alemán, area superintendent for the San Diego Unified School District, were eliminated from consideration.
The board will arrange a visit to Iowa and meet people in Tucson to further evaluate the two candidates.
A job offer to either candidate will be announced at a special board meeting scheduled for next Wednesday.
"We are trying to be as thorough as possible to pick the right person for TUSD," said board member Judy Burns. "There's a lot of issues."
The announcement came one day after the last of four forums involving the candidates.
Alex Rodriguez, TUSD Governing Board president, said the board took into account community feedback from the forums as well as research compiled by John Gordon, director of leadership development for the Arizona School Boards Association, which is conducting the search for TUSD.
Celania-Fagen is an associate superintendent for the Des Moines Public Schools district. Myers is a former vice president of development for IBM.
TUSD Superintendent Roger Pfeuffer is retiring at the end of June.
