Public forums have been scheduled to discuss the closure of four elementary schools in Tucson's largest school district.
Tucson Unified School District officials will start meeting with parents March 3 at Corbett, Ochoa, Rogers and Wrightstown elementary schools.
The following week, the Governing Board will begin public hearings at each school as well as at Rincon High School.
On Tuesday, the Governing Board voted 3-2 to begin the process of shuttering the four elementary schools and relocating two alternative- education programs, Downtown Alternative High School and PACE Alternative High School.
Board members Judy Burns and Adelita Grijalva voted against the process.
The first sessions are superintendent information meetings, in which TUSD officials will discuss the proposed closures as well as possible attendance boundary changes.
The public hearings will give community members a chance to voice their opinions on the proposed closures.
Notices of the meetings have been sent to parents and guardians of students at the schools slated for closure as well as the schools that will receive the relocated students.
TUSD officials said the decision regarding which schools to close was based on academic performance, enrollment, enrollment trends and a projected deficit of at least $15 million for the 2008-09 school year.
The announcement has been met with outrage, fear and skepticism from parents, teachers, students and community members.
TUSD officials said they hope to save up to $4 million by shuttering the schools.
