A U.S. Border Patrol agent shot and injured a 29-year-old Mexican man Thursday morning near Douglas after the man tried to flee in his truck after a traffic stop.
The incident occurred about 9:30 a.m. Thursday about nine miles north of the U.S.-Mexican border on Highway 191 when a Border Patrol agent stopped and questioned five people in a 1999 Chevy truck, said Carol Capas, Cochise County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman. The agent made the stop because he said the truck’s license plate number matched that of a truck seen loading up a group of illegal entrants earlier, Capas said.
As the agent began talking with the group, the driver, Luis Sanchez-Barron, 29, of Hermosillo, Mexico, started to drive away, she said. While holding on to the passenger side door, the agent fired a single round from his duty weapon. The bullet struck Sanchez-Barron in the leg, bringing the truck to a stop a short distance away, she said.
Sheriffs deputies and emergency medical personnel arrived to the scene and airlifted Sanchez-Barron to University Medical Center in Tucson. He was in fair condition Thursday afternoon, said hospital spokeswoman Lori Maré.
His identification card showed he lives in Hermosillo but authorities have not yet determined if he is an illegal entrant, Capas said.
The agent, whose name and age weren’t being released, was taken to Southeast Medical Center in Douglas to receive treatment for cuts and abrasions suffered when he fell from the fleeing vehicle, Capas said. His injuries are not serious.
The other four passengers in the vehicle — all suspected illegal border crossers — were taken into the Border Patrol station and are being questioned by Cochise County Sheriff’s deputies.
The Sheriff’s Office and federal authorities are handling the investigation.
