Despite slow start, UA coach still optimisticArizona Daily Star

Arizona coach Joan Bonvicini still fields questions about the game against Oregon State when four players fouled out. Two UA players remained on the court for the final minute of a double-overtime loss on Jan. 3.
"Those things you hear more about in high school," Bonvicini said. "You don't hear about that in college very often."
Arizona's roster woes have since improved. Freshman forward Ify Ibekwe, the team's third-leading scorer, has returned from an eye injury.
Sophomore forward Rheya Neabors is back in the rotation. A walk-on was added last week, and another might join.
But the Wildcats (6-10, 0-5 Pac-10) are still looking for their first conference victory, just as the league's top teams come to town. Arizona will play No. 7 Stanford today and No. 8 Cal on Saturday at McKale Center.
"We're just knocking on the door. We've got to knock the door down," Bonvicini said. "We're right there. We've just got to put it together for 40 minutes."
Bonvicini said she wants bigger contributions from players other than senior point guard Ashley Whisonant and junior forward Amina Njonkou, who combine to average 29.3 of Arizona's 65.5 points per game.
Whisonant admitted she is feeling the effects of playing significant minutes while Arizona has a short bench. Her 37.3 minutes per game leads the Pac-10.
"It's been pretty hard because it's a lot of wear and tear on your body," Whisonant said. "I don't know about anybody else, but my body feels like it's wearing down day by day."
Bonvicini and the players look at the positive side of their roster issues, saying the Wildcats have played hard. They have dropped their five Pac-10 games by an average of 7.6 points; the largest was a 10-point loss to ASU.
Bonvicini said the team's nucleus is "very, very good."
"At times it's hard," freshman guard Tasha Dickey said. "The small lineup is better because you're closer as a team and you depend on each other more than when you have a big lineup. We know we can't foul as much, and we can't make as many mistakes, because there's not a lot of people on the bench."
After Bonvicini praised the team's depth before the season, injuries, academics and personal reasons have reduced the roster. "That's the hand we were dealt, so you just deal with it," she said.
