It was a greyhound party outside of Muttropolis at La Encantada on Saturday, when the Arizona Greyhound Rescue organization was on hand trying to adopt out 22 of the retired racing dogs.
The pooches are "45-mph couch potatoes," said Julia Summers, the group's outreach director. When they get out, they run like fury and sprint. Then they want a place to sleep and rest, she said.
People interested in adopting a greyhound receive a home visit and must be able to meet certain criteria. Arizona Greyhound Rescue representatives want to make sure they place the dogs in the proper homes. Prospective adopters foster a dog for a week to be certain the animal is a good fit before the adoption is final.
Summers is a foster caretaker for Blondie, a 3-year-old retired greyhound.
Lorna Bozzo was walking past Muttropolis, 2905 E. Skyline Drive, when she spotted the dog. Bozzo had already adopted a 10-month-old shepherd-retriever mix named Sandy and figured it'd be great to have the pair together.
"I'm in love with that dog," she exclaimed as she walked away. "I'll be back!"
