Countrywide Financial Corp. Chief Executive Officer Angelo Mozilo inadvertently responded to an e- mail from a struggling mortgage borrower seeking help from the company, calling it "disgusting."
Dan Bailey wrote a May 19 e-mail to Mozilo and other executives at Countrywide, asking the Calabasas, California- based lender to lower his payment to help him keep his home. Bailey said he misunderstood the terms of his adjustable-rate loan and is unable to keep up with payments.
"This is unbelievable," Mozilo wrote the same day in an e-mail response that Countrywide called inadvertent. "Obviously they are being counseled by some other person or by the Internet. Disgusting."
Bailey wrote his letter using a sample from LoanSafe.org, a Web site that encourages borrowers to pester companies and executives until they agree to rework mortgages, according to Moe Bedard, who runs the site from Corona, California.
LoanSafe gets 50,000 to 75,000 visits a month from people seeking advice on avoiding foreclosure and getting mortgage modifications, Bedard said. More than half the inquiries are related to Countrywide mortgages, he said.
"With them being the largest subprime lender, they're going to be the biggest problem," said Bedard, 36, who started the site about a year ago. "Those people are looking for help, and Countrywide simply does not have enough people in their loss-mitigation department to handle all the wounded loans."
"Countrywide is actively working to help borrowers, like Mr. Bailey, keep their homes," the company said today in an e- mail statement.
The collapse of the subprime mortgage market has led to $2.5 billion in losses over the last three quarters at Countrywide.
