The Washington D.C.-based Biotechnology Industry Organization, or BIO, awarded Gov. Janet Napolitano with the Governor of the Year award in recognition of her support of the biosciences.
"With her support, investment in bioscience research and development has increased significantly, leading to an increase in the number bioscience jobs being created in the state," BIO CEO Jim Greenwood said in a press release.
According to the Arizona BioIndustry Association, the number of bioscience companies in Arizona increased 7 percent from 2000 to 2004, with a 12 percent increase in jobs in the sector.
As of mid-2006, Arizona had 667 bioscience companies, employing 74,422 people. The vast majority of those employees work in hospitals and laboratories.
