Two men were in the Cochise County jail Wednesday, charged with smuggling 10 people in an SUV that rolled over off U.S. 191 Tuesday about three miles north of Elfrida, killing two people and injuring several more.
A 21-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman died in the crash from massive injuries. They had not been publicly identified Wednesday while officials tried to contact their families.
In jail were a passenger, Flavio F. Oliveria, 22, and the driver, Alberto A. Sanchez, 21, of Tucson. Sanchez was the only one wearing a seat belt.
The sport utility vehicle was northbound on U.S. 191 when it went off the road, rolling over and ejecting some of the passengers.
Two passengers were in critical condition at University Medical Center. They are Rigoberto B. Lopez, 16, and Cristy Del Carmen Morales, 25.
Two others were in fair condition. They are Martha E. Cadena Ramos, 36, of Mexico and Francisco A. Perez, 16, of Mexico. Also injured were Homero R. Contrera, 36, of Mexico; Fernando Maldonado, 48; Ismael Mirales, 36; and Zoila Rodriguez, 21.
