A Border Patrol officer shot and wounded a man driving with four illegal immigrants near Sierra Vista on Sunday afternoon.
The man, driving a Chevrolet Camaro on Charleston Road, was ordered to pull over at Milepost 12 but kept going for another two miles, said Andy Adame, spokesman for the Tucson Sector of the Border Patrol.
Adame said that he had no information about what prompted the officer to shoot, but that the agency considers the case a smuggling incident.
"It's still under investigation and there won't be any information until the FBI comes to its conclusion," he said.
The man was wounded and flown to a Tucson hospital. Adame did not have the suspect's name and declined to release the name of the officer involved.
The four passengers were taken into custody, he said.
