Two Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents fired shots at suspected drug smugglers headed toward them at high speed in a pickup during a violent encounter Wednesday morning east of Douglas.
The agents, along with Border Patrol agents and Douglas police officers, were monitoring traffic about 6 a.m. on Geronimo Trail Road east of Douglas as part of an ongoing investigation into drug smuggling in that area, said Vincent Picard, Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman.
Border Patrol agents tried to stop one of two vehicles they spotted heading west into Douglas. The driver of the pickup, however, turned around and headed back east to avoid the agents, Picard said.
Agents were able to spike the truck's tires twice, but the vehicle was not stopped. The second vehicle, a sedan, became separated from the truck and hung back farther east, Picard said.
Two Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents parked their vehicles on one side of Geronimo Trail Road and got out to intercept the pickup truck, he said.
The pickup accelerated and drove directly at the agents. Fearing for their safety, both agents fired at the oncoming truck, Picard said. The truck veered and struck one of the parked vehicles at a high speed.
Neither of the customs agents was seriously injured.
A male passenger in the truck was seriously injured and airlifted to University Medical Center in Tucson. It doesn't appear he was hit by the gunfire, Picard said.
The driver ran away. He was picked up by the sedan and fled back to Mexico. Agents found several hundred pounds of marijuana in the truck, Picard said.
