Storm kills five, levels 3,000 huts
SUNAMGANJ — A tropical storm killed at least five villagers Saturday in northeastern Bangladesh, an official said.
The storm also leveled about 3,000 huts in four villages in the northeastern district of Sunamganj, said Mozammel Haq, a local Disaster Management and Relief Ministry official.
Most of the victims died when their bamboo and tin homes collapsed on them, Haq said.
Sunamganj district is 110 miles northeast of Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka.

Kurd demonstrators in clash with police
ISTANBUL — Kurdish protesters chanting support for separatist guerrillas clashed with police in eastern Turkey on Saturday during a spring festival. Dozens were injured.
Kurdish men hurled rocks at riot police who protected themselves with plastic shields during the festival in Van near Turkey's border with Iran. Police later fired tear gas to disperse the crowd and beat some of the protesters.
Mehmet Salih Kesmez, police chief of the eastern province of Van, said 38 protesters and 15 police officers were injured, and that 130 protesters were detained.
Protesters had gathered early Saturday to celebrate the Nowruz festival marking the beginning of spring, an event Kurds traditionally use to assert separatist demands.

Bhutto party names candidate for PM
ISLAMABAD — The party of slain opposition leader Benazir Bhutto named former parliament speaker Yousaf Raza Gilani as its candidate for Pakistan's next prime minister on Saturday.
Bhutto's Pakistan's People's Party won the biggest parliamentary bloc in Feb. 18 elections and is preparing to lead a new coalition government united against U.S.-backed President Pervez Musharraf, whose supporters were routed in the polls. The party enjoys the customary right to name the prime minister because it won the most seats.
Gilani was a close aide to Bhutto and spent four years in jail on allegations he abused his authority as speaker under Bhutto's second term as prime minister in the 1990s. He was freed in 2005.

Anti-Quran film ignites protest
AMSTERDAM — Demonstrators of all races and colors crowded Amsterdam's central square Saturday, braving wind and sleet to show their opposition to anti-immigration lawmaker Geert Wilders.
The protest, called "Netherlands Shows Its Colors," is primarily a reaction in advance to the short film Wilders says he will release later this month criticizing the Quran as a "fascist" book.
One protester carried a sign saying "standing together against the right wing populist witch-hunt." "I'm very much against Geert Wilders and racism in general, but I think it's really important to show not only Holland but the rest of the world that there's a lot of people who do not agree with his ideas," said Elisa Trepp.
Wilders, who says he is not racist, heads a reactionary party with nine seats in the 150-member Dutch parliament, elected on an anti-immigration platform.
While the exact contents of his 15-minute movie, due to be released by March 31, are unknown, Wilders has said it will underscore his view that Islam's holy book is fascist.
Dutch officials fear the movie could spark violent protests in Muslim countries, similar to those after the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in a Danish newspaper.
