A U.S. District Judge this week sentenced a 35-year-old Mexican man to five and a half years in prison for assaulting Border Patrol agents.
On April 11, 2006, near Douglas, Border Patrol agents tried to apprehend a group of 16 illegal border crossers that included Jorge Alcaraz-Carrillo, of Sonora, Mexico, said a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The group broke up and agents pursued four people who ran one way. They found Alcaraz-Carrillo hiding near a mesquite tree and ordered him to the ground when he tried to get away.
He ignored them and a scuffle ensued when the agent grabbed him. Another agent arrived to help handcuff Alcaraz-Carrillo, the release said. While pulling him out from underneath the tree, he kicked one of the agents in the groin and while walking toward the agent's vehicle, he spit at them, the release said.
Agents later learned that Alcaraz-Carrillo had been on federal supervision for a prior case in federal court.
On Monday, U.S. District Chief Judge John M. Roll sentenced him to 66 months and three years supervised release for three counts of illegal re-entry after deportation and assault on federal officers.
