PHOENIX — The Arizona Attorney General's Office asked a federal judge Friday to deny an attempt to stop the state's new employer sanctions law before it goes into effect next year.
In a 41-page motion filed in U.S. District Court, Attorney General Terry Goddard argued that Arizona is within its right to crack down on hirings of illegal immigrants.
Business groups and Chicanos Por La Causa Inc. filed lawsuits against the state this year, contending it's the responsibility of the federal government to regulate immigration.
Goddard, who is acting on behalf of state agencies and Gov. Janet Napolitano, said that the lawsuits are based on an erroneous reading of federal law. He added that the employer sanctions law does not conflict with federal laws.
The law, which takes effect in January, requires employers to verify the employment eligibility of their workers through a federal database.
Violators could face a business license suspension lasting up to 10 days.
Second-time violators would have their business licenses revoked permanently.
