Two former partners at Snell & Wilmer are opening the only national labor and employment law firm in Tucson.
Lawyers Tibor Nagy and Jim Mackie will be the founding shareholders of the Tucson office of boutique law firm Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart PC, known as Ogletree Deakins.
Nagy had worked for Snell & Wilmer LLP for 23 years, and Mackie 16 years. Both also are former chairmen of the State Bar of Arizona Labor & Employment Section.
"It was an opportunity for us to expand our practice," Nagy said.
Under Ogletree Deakins, the two will be able to take on bigger and better clients, and expand their scope from regional work in the Southwest to national-level work, Mackie said.
"For the same reason this is an opportunity for us, we see it as an opportunity for employers as well," he added, noting they'll be able to serve national-level clients and call on the expertise of lawyers throughout the Ogletree Deakins chain.
Nagy and Mackie declined to name businesses they represent, but said they represent many of the top employers in the area in matters including wrongful discharge, employment discrimination, anti-competition covenants and trade secrets, employment contracts, and manuals and policies.
The Tucson office will open at 6760 N. Oracle Road on Aug. 15.
Ogletree Deakins is the nation's third-largest labor and employment law firm and has 25 offices with more than 300 labor law lawyers nationwide. The firm opened a Phoenix office about a year ago.
"As Phoenix and Tucson are a soon-to-be 'megatropolis,' the addition of an office in Southern Arizona makes perfect sense and allows us to further expand our presence in the West," Ogletree Deakins managing shareholder Gray Geddie said in a press statement.
In addition to handling labor and employment law matters, the firm has practices focused on business immigration, employee benefits and workplace safety and health law.
In Tucson, the firm will compete with Snell & Wilmer, Lewis and Roca and Fennemore Craig.
