Slump in tourism means bargains for summer Tucsonans

Arizona Daily Star

Take a weaker winter tourist season, add the seasonal summer slowdown, throw in high gas prices and airfares, and you have a recipe for summer deals.
This year there is even a Web site where many local hotels and resorts have listed their summer specials, Tucsonwillsurpriseyou.com.
This winter tourist season was down from previous years, said Rick Vaughan, senior vice president for sales and marketing at the Metropolitan Tucson Convention and Visitors Bureau.
January-May Tucson-area hotel occupancy was 69.4 percent, compared with 74.2 percent in the same period last year, according to Smith Travel Research. Bed-tax collections in Pima County in the first quarter of 2008 were down by 19 percent compared with 2007.
This summer, Vaughan said, what hotels are offering is "more unique" and "more aggressive."
Said Michael Dominguez, director of marketing for Loews Ventana Canyon Resort: "We're offering decent rates, but it's not all about the rate — it's what we're offering with it."
Among those items: gas cards, credits for resort services and cheap or free golf.

Here are selected summer specials being offered at Tucson's biggest resorts. The rates vary, and in many cases those listed are minimums. For more deals at these and other locations, go to Tucsonwillsurpriseyou. com and click on "summer deals" or visit the hotels' own Web sites.
