"The Border that Works" tour by a top U.S. Commerce Department official — which was expected to announce the dollars lost when commercial trucks spend hours in line at the U.S. border — has been cancelled.
Assistant Secretary of Commerce David Bohigian was scheduled to visit Tucson Tuesday as part of a San Diego-to-McAllen, Texas border tour. He was expected to discuss the findings of a multi-state border study that evaluated the impact that border wait times have on U.S. and Mexican industry and consumers.
But Monday morning, his office sent out the following notice: "The Border That Works Tour has been postponed. We learned last night that Washington D.C. needs further clearance of the report, We are looking at dates in May to reschedule."
Congestion at the Mariposa Port of Entry in Nogales has been a source of concern for commerce and trade officials who want more resources to move trade into the U.S.
The much-anticipated study was expected to:
● Calculate wait times of commercial shipments.
● Determine economic impact of wait times on state and national economies.
● Recommend 3-5 changes at each port of entry.
No date has been set for the release of the report.
