How do I make my own dog treats?

Carey Haas started cooking for her dog Wylie, a cattle dog, when he was diagnosed with valley fever about five years ago. She wanted to give him quality ingredients to help boost his overall health in addition to the medical care he was receiving.
She continued to cook for him as he improved. "Friends started asking me if I would cook for their dogs, too. I was encouraged and started doing a lot of research," said Haas, who has worked with animals all her life.
She founded Wiley's Reserve Handmade Organic Dog Food and Treats about four years ago. Today she makes custom doggie birthday cakes, dog food and treats for both dogs and cats.
You can shop online, www.wyliesreserve.com or call 322-DOGS(322-3647), and also find some products at Dirty Dawgs, a self-serve dog wash at 2510 N. Campbell Ave.; 777-6045.
Haas shared this recipe for doggy treats, which she says make great gifts for the holidays.
Organic Carob Pup Truffles
• 12 ounces carob chips (Haas uses Sunspire Vegan brand — available at Wild Oats. Never use chocolate, which is toxic to dogs).
• One cup organic peanut butter (creamy works best), thoroughly stirred.
• One cup of organic rolled oats, finely ground in food processor
Melt carob chips slowly, over double boiler. Stir constantly. Remove from heat and add peanut butter and one-third of the oats.
Let cool until you can form ingredients into small, uniform-size balls.
Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate (Haas says they stay fresh for several weeks).
When ready to serve, allow truffles to come to room temperature and then roll in oats.
