Editorial page to give Krauthammer a whirlReader Advocate

Ah, the power of a few. A handful of readers suggested replacements for syndicated columnist Tony Snow, who starts Monday at the White House as press secretary.
Editorial Page Editor Ann Brown listened and will test Charles Krauthammer of the Washington Post Writers Group who won the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for distinguished commentary. His column will run Saturdays.
Joseph L. McNully suggested Tony Blankley, editorial page editor of the Washington Times, as Snow's replacement and a counter to Molly Ivins, who appeared with Snow on Saturdays. "It's hard to believe now but in years past I often agreed with Mr. Blankley. He now strikes me as such an unabashed supporter of all things Bush 43 that I very rarely agree with him. I hope you will not select a replacement who is not open to reader response, as is the situation with all New York Times columnists," McNully said.
Krauthammer's e-mail address is letters@charleskrauthammer.com.
Chet Chapman e-mailed that it "seems to be a no-brainer to me — bring back Ann Coulter to counterbalance the strident remarks by (Thomas) Friedman and (Paul) Krugman."
Eva Thorburn suggested Walter Williams, an economist at George Mason University. "He is knowledgeable, funny and would add ethnic balance to the page,'' she e-mailed.
T.M. Davies e-mailed: "Please consider Charles Krauthammer as the replacement for Tony Snow. He is the most common-sense writer in the media.''
Don Peterman e-mailed that Krauthammer is "interesting, amusing, factual and a conservative advocate without being shrill. I think Mr. Krauthammer would bring a sense of realism and thoughtful discussion to the editorial page.''
Priscilla Robinson called Krauthammer an "independent thinker, a slave to no one, and clearly conservative.'' Her e-mail continued: "I want to have my ideas challenged on the Op-Ed pages by engaging writers who can occasionally think new thoughts.''
Robinson added that her "current absolute favorite in the Star is the new column by Garrison Keillor. What a happy moment when you open up the paper and find him waiting to tell you a warm, funny story." Keillor runs Thursdays on the Op-Ed page.
Three endorsements isn't a trend. Brown will try Krauthammer's column on Saturdays for a few weeks and add it to the Op-Ed column lineup if he does add to the thoughtful discussion.
