Celebrate Christmas in May next weekend with a trip to Williams.
In advance of the Nov. 6 nationwide release of an animated version of "A Christmas Carol" starring Jim Carrey, Walt Disney Studios launched a 40-city railroad tour Saturday to promote the movie.
The train tour began in Los Angeles and will end Oct. 30 at Grand Central Station in New York City.
From Friday through next Sunday, the four-car exhibit train will be at the Grand Canyon Railway Station, 233 N. Grand Canyon Blvd., in Williams, where up to 1,200 people can go through it every hour.
For the free event, slated 9 a.m.-9 p.m., the train station will be decked out for Christmas — complete with snow (courtesy of machines) blanketing the area and thousands of lights. There also will be carolers garbed in costumes in keeping with London in the early 1800s and an inflatable digital theater where visitors can see how Charles Dickens envisioned London, as well as clips from the new 3-D movie.
The railway cars' exhibits will feature Dickens artifacts and digital costume images, a model shop with a soundstage mock-up and props to explain how the film was made, and an interactive London map from the period.
The highlight will be the fourth car, where visitors will experience the sights, sounds and aromas of the festive Christmas celebrated at the home of Scrooge's nephew, Fred.
To get to Williams, take Interstate 10 to Phoenix, then Interstate 17 north to Flag-staff. From there, go west on Interstate 40 about 30 miles to Williams. Total driving distance: about 290 miles.
