Information is power. So before making a hotel reservation, arm yourself with specific room information. Chosen by Time as one of 2008's best Web sites, the online guidebook gives you the skinny on which rooms have the biggest bathrooms and best views (and which are near ice machines or noisy elevators), plus pet policies and airport shuttle schedules.
TripKick's search engine allows you to filter by city, hotel size and even level of cool. Looking for a hip, modern, boutique option in LA? Co-founders Bryant Waters and Daniel Dobrott (who personally visit every hotel) suggest the Standard. Specifically, rooms ending in 20, 22, 52 and 54, as they are "oversized corner rooms" in the "extra-large room category with two windows and wraparound patios." "Fifty-two has the best views, and 54 is the quietest."
The best part? You can book directly from the site. But then you'll miss astonishing the reservations clerk with your request for room 154.
