Brice Winston, a local sax player and rising figure on the international jazz scene, is getting 2009 off to a good start with a Thursday show featuring his quartet at the Desert Diamond Casino's Monsoon Night Club.
Winston grew up in Tucson, but honed his jazz skills while living in New Orleans.
He is perhaps best known for his work with famed jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard and has contributed heavily to Blanchard's scores on many of Spike Lee's films.
Winston's fairly new local quartet will give Tucsonans a taste of his talent. The show starts at 7:30 p.m., and cover is $5. Monsoon is located at the Desert Diamond Casino, 7350 S. Nogales Highway.
Theater
● Strap on your rock 'n' roll sensibilities next week and head on over to Live Theatre Workshop, where the company's late-night arm, Etcetera, opens the musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch."
The play, with a book by John Cameron Mitchell and lyrics by Stephen Trask, is at once heartbreaking and hilarious.
Hedwig is the victim of a botched sex-change operation. He's also a victim of pop icon Tommy Gnosis. Tommy and Hedwig were in love (or so Hedwig thought) and had a sweet affair. Then Tommy runs off and becomes a singing sensation, claiming he wrote the songs he sings. Hedwig, on the other hand, says he's the one who wrote the songs. He forms a band and shadows Tommy's tour around the country.
The Etcetera production, directed by Shana Nunez, opens at 10:30 p.m. next Friday and plays at 10:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Jan. 24 at Live Theatre, 5317 E. Speedway.
Tickets to the 90-minute production are $10.
