Pity the kitties whose owners can't afford food for them. And pups without even a bit of bone to gnaw.
To help these animals and their families, the Hermitage Cat Shelter is sponsoring Meows & Meals — a kitty adoptathon and food drive for pets Saturday.
The food drive — for cats and dogs — was started last year by Hermitage Cat Shelter as a way to help families struggling to get meals on the table for themselves, let alone their pets.
"We were hearing that people were going without food in order to feed their animals," said Hermitage director Mary Jo Spring.
Hermitage, a no-kill cat shelter, works with homeless shelters and area food pantries to distribute the food.
Since last year, it has distributed 26,000 pounds of cat and dog food, but for the first time, "our cupboards are bare," Spring said.
"Even one can of food" would help, she said, and "that way, it's not too expensive" for the donors.
